Glen Dye Wild Blaeberry Jelly by Caroline
Made by Caroline at Glen Dye.
We generally associate blueberries with supermarkets and quaff them for their taste and much-lauded life-enhancing antioxidants. When they are good (sometimes) they are very good, and when they are bad (often) they are at best dreary, at worst disgusting.
At Glen Dye wild blueberries are prolific in the woodlands and on the heather moorland. We call them blaeberries here and they are smaller and richer than anything you’ll find in a supermarket. Once ripe, they are always delicious.
We pick them by hand or by using a blaeberry scoop. Either way, collecting enough to make this jelly is back-breaking work. But taste this and you’ll know that the effort is richly rewarded.
